• Fairview Southdale Hospital was featured with Andrew Will, M.D. of Twin Cities Pain Clinic in a story about a treatment to lessen or eliminate extreme back pain. • Fairview's "green" movement was featured on WCCO-TV. The story shows a surgeon at University of Minnesota Medical Center who is leading by example when it comes to reducing costs and waste in the operating room.  Rafael Andrade, M.D., a UMP thoracic surgeon was interviewed about his work to eliminate unneccesary materials from pre-packaged surgery kits, reducing costs and waste.  The story also talked about several "green" investments made at Fairview Southdale Hospital, including the use of occupancy sensors to turn off  lights when not neeeded, biodegradeable carry-out containers and reuseable water bottles in the cafeteria--plus water saving devices in use on faucets and showers. • Richard Karulf, M.D., chief of surgery at Fairview Southdale Hospital, was quoted in the April 1 Wall Street Journal about efforts to reduce the incidence of hospital-acquired blood clots. Fairview Southdale Hospital is part of the Surgical Care Improvement Project, a national program designed to reduce surgical complications.
• Fairview Southdale and Fairview Ridges hospitals were part of a front-page story in the March 30 Star Tribune on new tactics by local hospitals to help patients better understand and prepare for upcoming medical bills as more families choose high-deductible insurance plans and are responsible for more out of-pocket costs.
