Our staff expertly delivers more than 3,400 babies each year. While new procedures, techniques and services are always being created; one constant at Fairview Southdale Hospital has been our exceptional maternal and newborn care.

Exceptional care
Our staff is prepared to deal with any birth, under any circumstance. Laboring mothers enjoy private rooms where they can labor, give birth and recover before transferring to a private mother-baby suite, where bonding between baby and family can truly begin.

Two operating rooms dedicated to obstetrical care are located within The Birthplace, so mothers having c-sections don't have to leave the comfort of The Birthplace for their baby's birth.   After recovering from a C-section, mothers are transferred to special mother-baby suites to rest and recover while bonding with and learning to care for the newest addition to the family. 

Compassionate care
Our staff is focused on providing family-centered care and experienced at helping families through the birthing process and beginning your life together.  We help parents learn how to care for their new baby, whether it is the first, or one of many. Each birth is precious and we help make sure this special time is something you will cherish forever. In some circumstances, families need extra care. In those times, we offer:

• On-site special care nursery
• Access to Fairview-University Medical Center’s Level 4 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
• Pregnancy and Newborn Loss Program.

For expectant parents

• Schedule a tour
  Parent participating in a birth and family ed class will get a tour of the facility as part of their class. We also offer tours for those not attending the birth classes. To schedule a tour, call 612-672-7272.
• Register online
  The Birthplace at Fairview Southdale Hospital is pleased to offer online pre-registration. On-line registration is easy, secure and reduces your need to fax or mail pre-registration forms to us. This service allows for a speedier check-in process when you arrive at the hospital.
• Take a class
  Fairview hospital's offer an extensive selection of birth and parenting classes to prepare you for the birth experiences and your new parental role.  Classes are also available for grandparents and siblings. 
• Maternal-Fetal Medicine Center
  The Maternal-Fetal Medicine Center offers a comprehensive range of personalized obstetrical care and fetal diagnosis and treatment services for pregnant women who are at risk for or experiencing a medically complicated pregnancy.
